Cebu: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Cebu, the fastest-growing region in the Philippines, seamlessly blends tradition and modernity. Its vibrant economy has attracted a diverse mix of local entrepreneurs and international investors, transforming the province into an economic powerhouse. Key cities such as Lapu-Lapu (13.2% economic growth rate in 2022), Mandaue (9%), and Cebu City (8.4%) exemplify this dynamism. This growth is celebrated annually during Cebu Business Month (CBM), which brings together leaders, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders in high-impact events that celebrate the province’s economic achievements and spur further innovation and collaboration.

Highlights of Cebu Business Month 2024

Tech Summit: Exploring AI and Digital Transformation

During CBM’s Tech Summit, delegates explored cutting-edge advancements in AI and digital transformation, showcasing new business opportunities and the infinite possibilities these technologies present.

Entrepreneurial Summit: Fostering Local Startups

The Entrepreneurial Summit provided a platform for local startups to share their innovations and network, fostering synergies and collaboration. According to Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) President Jay Yuvallos, “Cebu Business Month celebrates our collective spirit of resilience and innovation. It’s about paving the way for sustainable growth and prosperity in our region.”

Visionary Plans for Cebu City’s Future

Creative District Initiative

Architect Joseph Michael P. Espina, Officer-in-Charge of Cebu City’s Planning Development Office, presented a visionary blueprint for the city’s growth. The plan includes holistic urban planning that addresses evolving needs while preserving cultural heritage and natural beauty. Acting Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia emphasized the establishment of a Creative District to attract investments, enhance infrastructure, and improve residents’ quality of life. Garcia noted, “Cebu City has always been a hub for innovation, creativity, and talent. With our rich culture and heritage and dynamic population, Cebu is the perfect place to invest in creative entertainment industries.”

Replicating Success: The IT Park Model

Garcia highlighted the success of the IT Park in Cebu, which employs about 150,000 to 200,000 people. The city aims to replicate this success with the new Creative District, envisioning endless possibilities for growth and innovation.

Grounded in Reality: Energy Security and Water Sustainability

Energy Security: A Balanced Approach

Ronaldo Ramos, Chief Operating Officer of AboitizPower Thermal Business Group’s Operated Assets, addressed the challenges to Cebu’s energy security. He highlighted the need for a balanced approach that integrates renewable energy sources with innovative baseload energy to ensure reliability. Ramos stated, “AboitizPower has two major energy projects in the pipeline for Visayas. The 173 MWp Calatrava Solar in Negros Occidental and the 150 MW Unit 3 brownfield project of the existing Therma Visayas, Inc. plant in Toledo City, Cebu. Both are meant to be part of the solution, but the two have their own story, context, and roles to play.”

Renewable Energy Projects

These projects are crucial for providing reliable, cost-efficient, and accessible baseload power to the Visayas. As Cebu continues to develop, the integration of renewable energy with baseload energy is essential for maintaining a stable and adequate energy supply that supports current demands and future growth.

Collaboration for Sustainable Energy

Acting Mayor Garcia emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving a sustainable energy landscape. He stated, “As we embark on this journey towards a sustainable energy landscape, collaboration is paramount. It’s the synergy of the stakeholders, from generation to distribution, to the customers and also our government leaders that we will be able to fully unlock the potential of Cebu.”

Water Sustainability: An Overlooked Yet Crucial Issue

Promoting Sustainable Water Management

Atty. Jes Anthony N. Garcia, SVP for Infrastructure at Vivant Corporation, highlighted the critical importance of water sustainability in promoting development across Cebu. He stated, “As we drive Cebu forward, it is crucial to address one of the most pressing yet overlooked issues of our time, and that is waste water sustainability. It is often overlooked by many that together, with the benefit of consuming and using clean water, comes the responsibility of properly treating waste water so that the natural water cycle can continue in a sustainable manner for generations to come.”
